Star Wars Micro Galaxy Squadron Series 3

2022 Jazwares Action Fleet-inspired line

Currently Micro Galaxy Squadron Series has yet to be released. However, we know that Series 3 contains the 4 Republic Gunship repaints as part of the Grand Army of the Republic collection. And, people are finding the Boonta Eve Podracer pack in New Zealand, which contains Anakin's and Sebulba's podracers.

More recently, someone received a package of Eta-class Jedi Interceptors. The card back shows the First Order TIE, repaints for the Jedi Interceptor and Jedi Starfighter, and a slew of Blind Box offerings including the Treadspeeder and Cad Bane's speeder bike.

Series 3 Blind Boxes

Features:

  • Imperial Patrol Speeder - Patrol Trooper
  • Hover E-WEB - Stormtrooper
  • Treadspeeder - First Order Stormtrooper
  • Nikto Speeder Bike - Tusken Raider
  • Bad Batch BARC Speeder - Tech
  • Imperial Speeder Bike - Snowtrooper
  • Flitknot Speeder - Count Dooku (removable cape)
  • Starhawk Speeder Bike - Cad Bane

This was a really great round of Blind Boxes. The Patrol Speeder is probably my favorite with a lot of detail. Second would be the Nikto Speeder bike, which features my favorite Tusken Raider. Cad Bane and Tech look phenomenal with a lot of extra detail both in the molding and paint job. Jazwares painted the Snowtrooper in different shades to add contrast, and the bike is different from the Series 1 white bike. The Hover E-WEB has a poseable cannon, and the Stormtrooper has more painted detail than prior releases.

The Snowtrooper and Count Dooku are both Rare with Cad Bane being the Chase of this series.

Anakin's & Obi-Wan's Jedi Interceptor

Features:

  • opening wings
  • opening cockpit
  • retractable landing gear (3)
  • poseable Anakin Skywalker & R2-D2 or Obi-Wan Kenobi & R4-P17

For such small fighters, these are packed with features. The wings open smoothly, but stay closed well. I love the retractable landing gear that pop into place. Lastly, the cockpit in incredibly detailed and looks exactly like the filming models. For the figures, Obi-Wan is a rehash of the AOTC Jedi Starfighter version. Yet, R2 has a shinier dome now.

One minor issue is that when opened, the lower wings angle inward a little too much. It's small, but looks kinda off. Also, the finger tabs on the wing tips seem unnecessary because they aren't hard to open at all. Still, I love the mold, the size, and the features.

First Order TIE Fighter

Features:

  • opening canopy
  • opening rear engine hatch
  • push button on bottom ejects pilot
  • wings can pop off
  • poseable TIE Pilot

The First Order TIE seems much sturdier and more detailed than the standard Imperial cousin. There are cut-outs in the wing pylons, and the canopy has a red tint. Jazwares did a nice job at making the wings accurate, thus different than the standard TIE, but they are NOT interchangeable with the Imperial version.

Plo Koon's Jedi Starfighter

Features:

  • opening cockpit
  • retractable landing gear (3)
  • underside button pops up R2 unit
  • poseable Plo Koon and R7-D4

OK, I am in love with the paint scheme on this one. Yes, it doesn't come with a hyperdrive ring, but the overall look is amazing. The weathering is there, but not overdone. Plus, you get a really great model of Plo Koon.

Anakin's Jedi Starfighter

Features:

  • same features as Series 1 Jedi Starfighter
  • Yellow TCW scheme
  • poseable Anakin Skywalker and R2-D2

While this may be simply a repaint, I think it's awesome. If you've ever painted yellow, then you know how hard it is. Yet, the yellow here looks perfect. The red tinted canopy adds a nice pop of color, and I hope they do tinted canopies more often. Anakin has his TCW clothing, and R2 is well...R2.

Poe's T-70 X-wing

Features:

  • opening cockpit
  • retractable landing gear (3)
  • opening s-foils
  • push-button on bottom to pop out astromech
  • Poseable Poe Dameron and BB-8

I loved what they did with Poe's X-wing. The off-black color is awesome, and the orange really pops. Out of 3 that I bought, 1 had wings that didn't close very well. Luckily, the others are fine. BB-8 looks great, and the cockpit fits R2 units as well.

One issue many people have is that the nose doesn't connect flush, and has a little gap. To fix this, remove the 3 screws and pop it apart where the glued-on nub is in the nose. Then cut off the nub, and you will find it fits much better. You may have to remove a little from the other hull as well, so that nothing it poking out.

Poe's Blue T-70 X-wing

Features:

  • opening cockpit
  • retractable landing gear (3)
  • opening s-foils
  • push-button on bottom to pop out astromech
  • Poseable Poe Dameron and BB-8

I was sad that this was a Chase, but it's an awesome model. The paint job on Poe is a little rough, but it may just be my copy. However, this T-70 is just like the black one with the gap in the nose. I haven't fixed it yet in the photos here.

Features:

  • opening canopy
  • opening fins above astromech
  • rotating wings recreate flight/landing positions
  • retractable landing gear
  • poseable Clone Pilot and Q7 Astromech

The V-wing was always a favorite of mine and seeing it represented here is amazing. Jazwares did an excellent job. The wings rotate forward and then backward to landing position (so the starboard wings rotate clockwise to land), which mirrors what we saw in Bad Batch. However, you can position them horizontal as seen in Revenge of the Sith. The Clone Pilot is excellent. Strangely, they labeled the astromech as R4-P17, which is Obi-Wan's droid. In Canon, it is a Q7-series droid.

General Grievous' Starfighter

Features:

  • opening canopy
  • pop-up blasters
  • retracting rear fin
  • retractable landing gear (2)
  • poseable General Grievous with removable cape

While I feel that Jazwares did an amazing job with the mold and look, General Grievous' Starfighter may be the most fiddly toy they've made. The landing gear are VERY hard to pull out, as are the top blasters, which I'm worried may break. More importantly, when you fold in the rear fin, the hulls seem to open a little like they're under a lot of pressure. I worry this will weaken the toy over time. General Grievous is nice, but very fragile, especially his arms and cape. He is the same size as other figures, so not quite true to scale.

However, I do think the look is spot-on. I love the metallic blue plastic and the golden-yellow paint job.

Inquisitor Transport Scythe

Features:

  • opening cockpit
  • opening wings
  • fold-down landing gear (2)
  • flip-down ramp
  • pop-out rear panel with full interior
  • interior has slot for most speeders to fit
  • poseable Grand Inquisitor, Fifth Brother, Reva

Considering I wasn't expecting much with this one, the Scythe really surprised me. It's got a great size with lots of features. The cockpit actually fits 3 figures, and the rear cargo area adds a lot of play value. Each figure has tremendous detail down to the lightsabers attached to their backs, as well as the red marks on the Grand Inquisitor's head. The color is overall charcoal, much darker than promo photos. Some panels feel smoother than others creating additional contrast. Finally, the wings have 3 positions: diagonally down, diagonally up, and straight up.

Also, I have to add that the front "teeth" parts snap into place and create panel lines where they attach. These lines are perfect and truly show how well-engineered this toy is.

Modification: if you want the figures to fit easier, cut a little off the clips in the center. You don't have to remove it all, just enough that the figures pop in easier. See the final photo.

Republic Gunship "Muunilinst 10"

Features:

  • same features as Series 2 Republic Gunship
  • poseable Clone Pilot, Red ARC Trooper, Blue ARC Trooper

As someone who isn't a huge fan of the original Clone Wars micro series, I love the designs therein. The Tiger Shark Gunship or Muunilinst 10 is a beautiful repaint. The blue isn't too dark, and the weathering looks nice against the basecoat. To top everything off, I love getting some ARC Troopers.

Boonta Eve - Battle Pack

Features:

  • Anakin's podracer with opening fins (6)
  • Sebulba's podracer with massive arrogance
  • Each podracer has ball joints for hoses and electrical arcs
  • Each has a custom clear stand
  • poseable Anakin Skywalker and Sebulba

Jaxwares lists this as a Series 1 Battle Pack, but it came out as part of Series 3. Though it's intended to be a Wal-Mart exclusive, this pack originally arrived first in Middle Earth, aka New Zealand. Overall, I love the way they articulated the podracers. The ball joints allow for a LOT of poseability. And the clear stands will support most of these poses. The one downside is that Anakin's podracer has really short fins. I also wish they had more action features. Still, I believe that Sebulba's podracer is much better than the Action Fleet version.

Note: Anakin's podracer engine length correctly matches Cobb Vanth's speeder.

Republic Gunship "Plo's Bros"

Features:

  • same features as Series 2 Republic Gunship
  • contains BARC speeder
  • poseable Clone Pilot and 4 Clonetroopers phase I

Jaxwares released 4 Republic Gunships as part of the Grand Army of the Republic packs in Series 3. Each comes with 5 figures and a BARC speeder. They corrected the wing ball turrets, so the painted area now angles vertically. However, about 3/4 of the BARC speeders have the front cannons facing backwards.

Lastly, I want to commend Jazwares for getting the nose-art Aurabesh correct on both sides. Often I see decals with simply a mirrored image of the writing, making it Aurabesh reversed on one side. Jazwares got it right, and I really feel these Gunships are better than the Series 2 version.

Republic Gunship "Separatist Nightmare"

Features:

  • same features as Series 2 Republic Gunship
  • contains BARC speeder
  • poseable Clone Pilot and 4 Clonetroopers phase I

  1. Never saw any of these hit shelves at my local stores, butthey have plenty of Ventress’ star fighter on clearance…Any idea why retail is so behind in some places?

    • Stores ordered too many series 1, and didn’t put out series 2 because series 1 was still on shelves. Now we’re up to series 4, and they’re behind.

  2. Same issues in alot of Places. Upstate NY is one of them. We either got wave 1’s Shelf warming, or have already Jumped to wave 4.

  3. Can the Jedi Interceptors and the V-Wing use the Hyperdrive Ring from the Jedi Starfighter like in the show?

If not, then that’s a sad little oversight.

    • Unfortunately, no. There’s really no way to make them fit without extensive modifications. And I don’t think they would use the same Hyperspace Ring anyway.

  4. Huh, you’re right. I assumed they used the same rings but the V-Wing/Interceptors use a different ring with six engines instead of two. Learn something new every day.

  5. Finally got the podracer set, just hit shelves here in Missouri—had the idea of setting them up in the old Action Fleet Podracer Hangar Bay and they look great. The scaling is amazing and like you said, Sebulba’s podracer is a ton better in this new line. Awesome set.

    • Congrats. Yeah, I really love the detail and scaling on these podracers. I’m really hoping they do more, maybe some that Galoob never got around to.
