Star Wars Micro Machines Epic Collections
Classic Trilogy miniatures from famous Legends novels
A lot of Truth in Legends
For a long time, the only expanded universe Star Wars fans had to enjoy were the novels. In particular, Timothy Zahn's Heir to the Empire novel in 1991 created a whole new storyline for our original heroes and introduced the great Grand Admiral Thrawn.
Galoob began to commemorate these novels in 1996, shortly after their Shadows of the Empire line. Each set featured 2 new ships and 1 old ship, as well as 3 new figures from the book.
The final 3 Epic Collections were only released overseas and are incredibly difficult to find.
Variant alert: some novel boxes do NOT have the yellow "look inside" sticker.
I - Heir to the Empire
- as seen in Heir to the Empire
- Lady Luck
- Imperial Star Destroyer
- Skipray Blastboat
- Mara Jade
- Grand Admiral Thrawn
- Wedge Antilles
As one of the first releases, it's still one of the tops for giving us Thrawn, Mara Jade, and the really cool Skipray Blastboat based on the colors seen in the comics. It's also not difficult to modify the Blastboat to have a rotating wing, as to display it in flight. Lady Luck still reminds me of a Star Trek ship. It's worth noting that the Star Destroyer here has blue engines instead of white.
II - Jedi Search
- as seen in Jedi Search
- Sun Crusher
- TIE Interceptor
- Z-95 Headhunter
- Admiral Daala
- Moruth Doole
- Kyp Durron
We get some unique figures in this one. I love the cool pose of the Admiral Daala. And who doesn't love getting a Z-95. I was less impressed with the Sun Crusher, but that's related to the design overall, not miniature.
III - The Truce at Bakura
- as seen in The Truce at Bakura
- Shriwirr
- TIE Fighter
- Flurry
- Bluescale
- Dev Sibwarra
- Gaeriel Captison
I knew little of this novel, but the Ssi-Ruu are an interesting species as is the Shriwirr fish-head thing cruiser. I was also glad to get the Flurry, which would later return in Rebels as the Quasar-Fire class Carrier.
IV - Dark Apprentice
- as seen in Dark Apprentice
- Tafanda Bay
- Probe Droid
- Expanded B-wing Fighter
- Dorsk 81
- Lando Calrissian
- Exar Kun
As a fan of the B-wing, I loved getting the larger Expanded B-wing, which is a completely new mold. Tafanda Bay is really cool as the Ithorian living city.
V - Dark Force Rising
- as seen in Dark Force Rising
- Coral Vanda
- X-wing
- Scimitar Assault Bomber
- Garm Bel Iblis
- Emperor Palpatine
- Borsk Fey'lya
I was incredibly excited for this release because I finally got a Scimitar Assault Bomber model with its 16 missile launchers. The figure selection is cool too considering we get Borsk, a Bothan. The Coral Vanda is odd, but neat.
VI - The Courtship of Princess Leia
- as seen in The Courtship of Princess Leia
- Mon Remonda
- AT-ST
- Hapes Nova Battle Cruiser
- Princess Leia
- Prince Isolder
- Gethzerion
While not my favorite novel, I loved getting the Mon Remonda. It has a really cool paint job. The Hapes Nova is a neat design as well. However, best is Princess Leia with her ruby-red lightsaber (not a bad guy color in Legends).
